What We’re Seeing Now with Google’s May 2022 Broad Core Update

The first wide-core update of the year, the May 2022 broad fundamental update, has started rolling out on the search engine. It began on May 25, 2022 at around 11:30 a.m. ET and therefore will continue for the next few weeks.

So far, there are several indications that the May 2022 core upgrade is off to a good start. Many tracking devices detected a significant fluctuation in Google search results during the course of the evening. In addition, the conversation that began this morning is intensifying. The conversation shifted from “oh no, there would be a search core upgrade released” to “oh yeah, our website decreased considerably in ratings.” A lot of this early conversation is integrated and mentioned below, including what the devices are displaying. A few of the resources may be updated later this morning when they become available.

Here’s a quick rundown of the most significant information we currently have:

1. The Google Broad Core Upgrade for May 2022 is the designation of the update that was released by Google in May of 2022.

Google’s Danny Sullivan (who is currently on vacation, thus this was probably written last week and posted by someone else, or he authored it while being on vacation) stated, “We bring meaningful modifications to our general ranking systems, referred to as core upgrades, several times per year.” The core modifications are intended to improve the general relevance of their search engine results, making them more helpful and valuable to everyone. Our May 2022 core version will be available now. The complete rollout would take approximately 1-2 weeks.”

Was this update previously tested by Google?

When we’ve been documenting, there was even a broad core upgrade similar to the ones we’ve also seen and discussed through May 16th. Google would not verify it; in reality, just under 12 hours before the announcement of this latest broad core upgrade, Google’s John Mueller stated that it was not true. “Nothing specific comes to mind. We are constantly working on improving the quality and relevancy of the search engine results, so a site’s visibility may change over time. 

Google claims that this is what we experienced prior to May 25th, which was unrelated to these unverified upgrades, although this happens regularly. Is it possible that Google was putting this core upgrade to the test in the wild? So whatever happened during the last week certainly felt like a search engine core upgrade to us? 

“When we typically announce core upgrades, we begin the roll-out at a certain point, never previously,” Google’s John Mueller said specifically. I’m not clear why he removed the tweet so soon after the core upgrade was revealed…

Previous Updates to the Broad Core

So, this should take several weeks to roll out, and it has been almost 6 months since the last upgrade, which would have been the November 2021 core update, which officially launched on November 17th and ended on November 30th. Prior to this November upgrade, the earlier core updates were July 2021 and June 2021, respectively. The only one before this, titled the Dec 2020 core update, was released six months before the June upgrade, on December 3, 2020. There was a seven-month delay until the May 2020 core upgrade on May 4, 2020. The previous one, the January 2020 core upgrade, was released on January 13, 2020, while the one before all this, the September 2019 core update, was released on September 24, 2019. Oh, and there was also the June 2019 core upgrade on June 3, 2019, and I could do this all day.
